What is calculus?

Dental calculus, also popularly called tartar, is formed by the hardening of plaque on the teeth that cannot be cleaned.

The source of calculus is usually food debris and saliva proteins. 

There are 2 types of calculus: 

 Subgingival : It is adherent to the root of the tooth below the gum line, usually in areas where there is gum disease.  

 Supragingival : It is on the visible part of the tooth above the gum line. Its color is white and yellow. 

 

 Are tartar bad for health? 

 As many scientific studies have shown, tartar is harmful to both your general health and your dental health.  

-Gum diseases 

-Gum recession 

-Bleeding gums 

-Damage to tooth enamel 

-Mouth odor 

-Decrease in bone tissue 

And most importantly, tartar is linked to death from heart attack. 

 

 How to remove tartar at home? 

 

You cannot remove tartar at home. If you try to do this, you can damage your teeth, and at the same time you cannot remove the tartar completely. You can get rid of your plaque and tartar with dental check-ups every 6 months.  

 

Is tartar cleaning harmful? 

 

There is no harm in scaling under appropriate procedures. It is normal to feel slight tingling and sensitivity in the first weeks.
